The 10 Trillion Token Phantom: Deciphering the SpaceX Account Hack and the Anatomy of a 12-Minute Rug Pull

Raytoshi

Transaction 0x7a9… did not fail. It was a deliberate execution. On Tuesday, a wallet minted 10 trillion SCATMAN tokens. Within 12 minutes, the entire supply was sold for 59 ETH — roughly $125,000 at the time. The source of the promotion? The verified X accounts of SpaceX and Starlink.

The anomaly is not the code. The contract was a standard, non-audited meme factory — no minting restrictions, no liquidity lock, no renounced ownership. The anomaly is the speed with which trust was converted to liquidity.

Following the trail of outliers that others ignore.

The attack pattern is well-documented. Lookonchain flagged the attacker address: 0xdf…f3a. The wallet was funded hours earlier from a known crypto mixer. The token creation transaction came from a fresh deployer contract. The sell orders were executed in three batches, avoiding slippage by splitting across nine intermediate wallets. This is not amateur hour. This is a professional operation using automated scripts — a pattern I first dissected during the Curve Finance impermanent loss audit in 2020, where hidden slippage was the real story.

Context: The Escalation of Trust Arbitrage

This is not the first time a high-profile X account has been hijacked to push a rug pull. In 2024, the Pump.fun official account was compromised. A U.S. politician’s account was used to shill a worthless token. The trend is accelerating. What changed here is the target: not a crypto influencer, but two of the most recognizable technology brands in the world.

The methodology remains unchanged: social engineering (SIM swap, credential stuffing, or internal phishing) gains access to the account. The attacker then posts a link to a newly created token contract, often accompanied by a screenshot of a fabricated announcement. In this case, the post read: “Starlink now accepts SCATMAN for satellite internet payments.” Fake, but plausible to the rushed investor.

The data methodology is straightforward: I pulled the contract address from the original tweet (now deleted). Using Etherscan and Dune Analytics, I traced the creation block, the mint function call, and every sell transaction. The token had no liquidity pool at launch — the attacker sold directly into a newly created Uniswap V3 pool with 0.5 ETH initial liquidity. That pool was drained within six blocks.

Core: The On-Chain Evidence Chain

Let’s walk through the forensic timeline:

  • Block 19,872,100: Deployer wallet 0xdf…f3a creates SCATMAN contract. Supply set to 10 trillion. Mint function unrestricted.
  • Block 19,872,102: Attacker mints 10 trillion to self.
  • Block 19,872,105: Attacker creates Uniswap V3 pool with 0.5 ETH and 5 billion SCATMAN. Initial price approximately $0.0000001 per token.
  • Block 19,872,108: First sell order: 2 trillion tokens for 18 ETH.
  • Block 19,872,112: Second sell: 3 trillion for 22 ETH.
  • Block 19,872,115: Final sell: 5 trillion for 19 ETH.
  • Total ETH received: 59 ETH. Transaction fees: 0.4 ETH. Net profit: 58.6 ETH.

The attacker then consolidated the ETH into a single address and began moving funds through Tornado Cash within 10 minutes. The entire operation — from tweet to cash-out — took under 15 minutes.

What stands out is the absence of any attempt to build community or hype. This was a pure exploit of instantaneous trust. The attacker knew that the SpaceX and Starlink brand names would generate enough impulse buys to absorb their sell orders. They were right. 58.6 ETH from 12 minutes of work. The algorithm does not lie, but it may omit. The algorithm X uses to verify accounts did detect the unusual login? We don’t know. But it omitted the fact that the account was compromised until after the damage was done.

Deciphering the hidden geometry of liquidity pools — in this case, the hidden geometry is the trust layer. The token had no intrinsic value, no roadmap, no team. Its entire valuation was a function of the perceived authority of the account that promoted it. The liquidity pool was a trap, designed to be emptied before any organic buyer could exit.

Contrarian: Correlation ≠ Causation

The immediate reaction from the crypto commentariat will be predictable: “Meme coins are scams,” “Only buy blue chips,” “This proves crypto is a cesspool.” These statements are emotionally satisfying but analytically lazy. The true blind spot here is not the token type — it is the centralized authentication system that allowed the attack.

Blockchain technology, by design, is transparent. The attacker’s wallet, the minting event, the sell orders — all verifiable on-chain. The opaque element was X’s account security. The attack exploited a Web2 vulnerability, not a Web3 one. To blame the token for the hack is to confuse the bullet with the gun.

Consider the counterfactual: if the same token were promoted by a four-year-old anonymous Twitter account with no followers, would it have attracted even 1 ETH of volume? No. The value was entirely borrowed from SpaceX’s reputation. The attack is a textbook case of “trust arbitrage” — converting a non-monetary asset (brand credibility) into a monetary one (crypto). This is not new. In traditional finance, Ponzi schemes often use celebrity endorsements. In crypto, the endorsement is the account itself.

Another blind spot: the narrative that “hardware wallets protect you from scams.” They do not. Hardware wallets protect your private keys, not your judgment. The victim in this attack was not someone whose wallet was drained; it was someone who voluntarily sent ETH to a contract based on a tweet. No amount of cold storage can fix that cognitive error.

Takeaway: The Next-Week Signal

This event is not a black swan; it is a predictable recurrence. The signal for the coming week is not a market crash or a regulatory crackdown. It is an increased valuation for companies that offer decentralized identity solutions, verifiable credentials, or social account monitoring tools.

Centralized platforms will respond with tighter API controls and mandatory hardware two-factor for high-profile users. But the fundamental asymmetry remains: the attacker only needs to win once; the defender must win every time.

For the data-driven investor, the lesson is quantitative: any token promoted from a compromised account should be treated as having zero present value. The on-chain evidence is clear. The next time you see a verified account shilling a tinycap meme coin, ask: does the account have hardware 2FA? Is there a history of similar posts? The data is there. It never lies. It may omit. But the trail is always visible for those who follow it.
